I see it more as if everyone's constantly hungry for something, and nobody knows what. All those things you mentioned can all quell the hunger for a period of time, however short or long. In the end it's a vacancy that cannot be permanently filled with anything, so the idea is to fill it with the least harmful and most productive continuous and consistent filling possible for your self. At least that's what I think.
